The Shadow’s Sweet Tooth

Happy Groundhog Day!

I’m not as timely this year as I would have liked to have been, but here is 2009’s poetry contribution for this lovely holiday. I looked to Edward Lear’s children’s poem for inspiration. The title of which I don’t want to type out because I already get enough spam on this blog as it is. Click it if ye feel so inclined.

Here are last year’s and the previous year’s contributions.

The Shadow’s Sweet Tooth

The Groundhog and his Shadow lived together
In a burrow snug as can be;
They ate and slept, and records they kept
Whilst studying winter meteorology.

Out the window the Groundhog gazed,
A sigh escaped his puffy pink cheeks,
“Every year I’m awed and amazed,
It’s always winter for six more weeks!
More weeks,
Winter for six more weeks!”

Shadow to Marmot, “Be calm, my Varmint”
How terribly negative you opine!
Oh! Let us have a cooky; and tomorrow play hooky:
If we leave it, it shall all be fine!”

The Groundhog was fraught, but the more that he thought,
He reckoned the idea was sound,
Sure he had fame, but life was rather mundane,
Such was the life in the ground
The ground
Such was the life in the ground.

“Dear Shadow, I shall play hooky, if you for my cooky…”
“Take your spot?” cried the Shadow, “I will!”
So the Groundhog took off, pledging his troth,
Disappearing beyond yonder hill.

The alarm clock it sounded, and out Shadow bounded,
To predict more ice and snow,
He was greeted with shouts, and looks full of doubts,
And then they began to bellow
Bellow
And and they began to bellow.

And all for a cooky, he let Groundhog play hooky,
Leaving him to deal with the angry mob,
He couldn’t believe he received no reprieve,
For this was not even his job!

And so Groundhog came back, treats in a sack,
Guilty for neglecting his duty, forsooth
Shadow forgot his rage, his anger assuaged
For indeed he had a sweet tooth
Sweet tooth
Indeed he had a sweet tooth.
